Steps to get customers from social media in Nigeria

Have you noticed that while some businesses have managed to get customers on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, TikTok etc., most other businesses are struggling to find one client, even after posting every day.

Yes. You post consistently across your social handles. You watch the analytics go up. Sometimes, you even gather a decent number of views and engagements yet there are no sales to show for your effort.

There are also times you post and there are no views. Or only a few people get to see it.

If you want to actually get customers from social media, you have to stop treating these platforms as your final destination. You need a repeatable framework that pulls prospects out of their casual scroll and drops them straight into your sales pipeline.

Here is exactly how you build this, based off the field test strategies we deploy for our clients at Victor Winners Digital.

Beyond optimizing your social media platforms and using hash tags (which are somehow getting redundant) do you even know exactly what your audience click on social media? Do you have an idea what makes users stop while scrolling?

These are important questions you must answer while creating content, if you want to get customers on social media.

Yes. And no, having huge views might not cut it. Because in some cases high viewers count will not translate to sales.

A while ago, we had set up a campaign for a client within the entertainment niche. One of the posts went completely viral. It racked up thousands of views, likes, comments, and shares.

By standard social media metrics, the team was celebrating a massive win. But behind the scenes, it failed at the core objective because that specific post generated almost zero link clicks.

Why did this happen? Because while the content triggered passive entertainment rather it did not meet the active user intent.

To fix the this, we completely flipped the concept for the next post. We deeply analyzed the audience’s intent to figure out exactly what would make them take the next step.

We placed clear, hard calls-to-action (CTAs) directly inside the video frames, anchored them firmly in the captions, and had the subject explicitly make a call for actual clicks directly on camera. This resulted in a massive boost in expected outcomes.

Truth is, clients are there but if you want to get customers on social media, your content must not only get users excited, it must clearly guide them towards taking a specific action.

Social media penalties are real. As platforms get overwhelmed with tons of lazy, robotic and scaled AI generated content, most are updating their algorithm to suppress certain kind of content.

If you look around, you’ll notice that many brands are generating raw, generic AI text and posting it directly on their feeds without adding any value, context or even making it align with their brand voice because they do not want to hire a social media manager.

This is a real problem. But human users and search algorithms are getting incredibly good at filtering out these low value content.

So, if you’re one of those brands posting this kind of content, don’t be surprised if you start getting limited visibility and clicks.

Also, social media platforms are increasingly suppressing posts containing outbound links in standard captions because they want to keep users on their platforms to serve them ads. So, careful with those links.

To get customers on social media without getting penalized, avoid scaled AI content. Create real value with every single piece of content you post. This is the template we use for clients and it works repeatedly.

For example, a client formerly stuck on posting random things on social media reached out to us to help them with getting traction across their socials.

We took over their platforms, implemented structural changes and just recently, some of the social media posts we published started ranking on Google AI overviews, few days after publishing, driving organic visibility and fresh visitors to their page.

Thing is, beyond getting clients on social media itself, your social media posts can also get visible on Google and AI search these days. But if you keep posting low value content, it won’t get you anywhere.

Some businesses do call us to complain that they have actual link clicks from social media without a corresponding call or even sales.

This is what leads to that situation in most cases;

After coming across your post, content or ideas on social media, some clients actually want to get to a central platform where they can learn more about you, authenticate your credibility or even place an order.

That’s where a website comes in. Even though a good number of small businesses do not have a website, a number of those that have one have not optimized the website for sales.

Now, not having a website might not necessarily be a problem for businesses in some industries but for some specific ones, your website is a core asset that must be easily accessible.

If your website feels clumsy, slow, or unoptimized for mobile users, a user will leave instantly, even after you worked so hard to get them there.

If you want to get customers on social media and actually have them become paying clients, do the following:

  • Fix Mobile Compatibility: Over 80 percent of users from social media are coming to your website via their mobile devices, be sure your website is compatible and can easily be rendered on mobile devices.
  • Optimize Website Speed: Slow loading website will drive away impatient social media users with plenty of options. Fix your speed.
  • Keep Technical Integrity at Optimum Levels: A missing SSL certificate, broken contact form or missing contact details can stop a potential customer from reaching you. Always ensure that all of this are in place.

In a nutshell, make sure that it is easy for social media users to reach you on your website if you want to turn them to paying clients.

A large number of sales on digital platforms happen in DMs. But, a good number of brands on social media actually suck at replying DMs.

If you’re doubting me, try texting like10 different brands on social media and find out for yourself, the reply rates.

As a business, you can’t survive and make sales on social media without meeting clients when they need you and your business. That’s the reality.

In fact, in today’s fast paced, scroll-through internet a delayed response might lead to a lost in sales. You have to avoid this at all cost.

To get customers on social media, set up systems that ensures a smooth and seamless communication between you and your potential customers, in your inbox.

For example, you can set up an auto reply mechanism that response to messages in your DMs as soon as they drop, set up an AI automated agents to answer or handle your DMs or have an actual social media manager take care of that.

You cannot afford to allow you DMs stay for hours without replies as this might lead you to lose your paying clients to the competition.

Again, in low trust markets across developing economies, storytelling and documented real growth journeys are the masterstroke to building trust and confidence with buyers.

A lot of founders led brands have used this to build thought leadership, grow their authority and credibility in a very busy digital ecosystem.

We also used this very well, especially in our early days when we have very few customers. It helped us to build the trust and credibility we needed before our target audience.

If you want your content to be deeply trusted by humans and cited as an authority by modern search engines, you must stop posting abstract theories.

Our lived experience as an agency has proven one clear rule; in low trust markets: the highest engagement and inquiries consistently come from sharing actual results you created and documenting the real growth journey.

So, if you want to get customers on social media, don’t just state what you can do; show the framework you used to fix a real problem for a real business.

Sharing authentic, transparent case studies causes your audience to stop viewing you as someone trying to sell them a service and start viewing you as someone that actually knows how things work.

One of my first rules of building a sustainable digital brand is: do not build everything on a land you do not own.

If you want to get customers from social media but your business relies solely on a social media profile to communicate, showcase your work, and close sales, you are operating at the mercy of a third-party platform owners, algorithm and rules.

And these third-party systems can change their rules overnight. Also, organic reach can drop without warning. Automated bots can flag accounts or lock out users for no clear reason. Even the followers you think you have does not actually belong to you, they belong to the platform.

The moment you realize this, it changes everything.

You must understand, the social media can be a great starting point but it is a temporary architecture you do not own.

Your primary goal on these platforms should never be to stay there permanently. It must be to capture that fleeting attention and route it immediately onto a digital property you own completely.

In the end, social media can serve as a great place to start building visibility for your business. That’s how most small business start but you must also grow your own digital asset.

Your own digital asset in this context is a platform you own with full control over its management. This can be a website, blog, email list etc.

Now, here are two reasons why you need a platform you can manage completely.

  • To build credibility and showcase professionalism. Most audiences in low trust and developing economies need more than a social media platform to know that you actually exist and they can trust you.

If all you have is a social media page on Facebook, Instagram or TikTok, you might be missing out on potential customers because they don’t trust your brand.

  • To have complete ownership over what happens on the platform. If all you have is a social media platform, anytime you go against the rules and the platform is taken from you, you might lose your business and audience.

If you have your own platform like a website (which you can get from here), that changes everything because you get to decide what happens there, completely.

So, if you want to get more customers on social media consistently, build your own digital asset and grow it, while still growing your social media platforms.

Use the social media as a channel to drive leads and potential customers to your own platforms like website, email leads etc.

This helps you in building a clearer and more consistent social media powered sales funnel that is reliable.

Final Words

Nearly any brand in any niche today can actually get customers on social media because the audience is there, the content can be created and growth can be earned but if you want to really make sales on social platform, you have to be strategic.

And the strategy is simple, use social media to capture raw attention, but build your business on a digital asset you own and control completely.

Also like I said earlier, when you eliminate generic content, optimize for real buyer intent, speed up your response times, and ensure that people can easily reach you beyond your social media, you can finally turn your social media into an engine for revenue growth.
