What makes Graphics Design Different from Other Online Businesses

One of the things that makes graphics design different as a business idea is that it is very attractive because it is easy to start. You can start a graphics design business from your home in Lagos, or Nairobi, run it and work with clients in Toronto, London or New York, without needing an office space.

It is the kind of business that nearly anyone can start. Whether you’re a stay at home mom in Kigali, a student in Accra or a young graduate doing a part time job in Delhi, you can start and run this business either full time or part time, provided you have the requisite skills.

And about the skills, it is easy to learn, compared to most other digital skills. With expertise in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Corel Draw, Indesign etc. You can also even start with easier design tools like Canva, and then learn and upgrade to design with the other more advanced tools. And you can also learn these skills if you don’t have them or work with people that do.

That said, the following are the steps to build a graphics design business from scratch as a beginener.

Whether you’re about to start a graphics design business or any other digital brand, before starting any brand, it is very important to find your motivation and set your goals so you can easily align your plan to deliver on a specific outcome.

So here, you’ll want to ask yourself, why exactly am I doing this? What do I want to achieve with this business? These questions gets you insights that helps you to understand how your business should be run so you can achieve your set outcomes.

Now, assuming this has been sorted out and you now understand your primary reason for starting a Graphics Design Business, the next thing you want to do is move on to setting goals, based on what is motivating you to start the business.

So, if your motivation is to start a business you can run by the side while doing your 9-5 job or being in school, you can set and tailor your goals to fit in with that, putting into considerations the time you’ll need to spend on your business and the other activities you’re engaged in.

In fact, setting goals like growth targets etc. will also affect the way you run the business.. So, you have to be really thoughtful and thorough through the goal setting process. Although that doesn’t have to scare you in any way. You can always adjust your goals to meet your realities, at intervals.

Also remember, while setting your goals, you have to consider the resources available to you like time, money, etc.

Do you have the right graphics design skills? This is a very crucial question you must answer before you step out to start a graphics design business.

According to 99 Designs, there are different areas or types of graphics design with their requires skills and focus areas. For example, we have from marketing and advertising to user interface, publication design, packaging design, environmental design etc., there are a whole lot of them. You could choose to focus or specialize in any of these areas.

While it is great to have the wholistic design skills to be able to function in all areas, it is important to have a specific area you’re very good at. An area where you have the skills, expertise or experience more than most people. This is one of the things that can easily set you apart. Making you irreplaceable by AI tools.

If you’re a complete beginner without basic design skills or someone with intention to work part time as graphic designer, you can start with any of the popular sub niche you feel the required skill is easier to learn, for a beginner.

From that particular niche you can then expand to learn the others through the process as you keep learning, growing in experience and working with clients.

Many times, new graphics designers make the mistakes of targeting the whole market with their services. This is not a smart strategy. You want to start with defining your perfect client so you can focus your energy on targeting them.

At this point, based on your knowledge of the different niche, you’ll want to choose a particular kind of client you want to cater for. Or put differently, your area of specialization. The knowledge of this will also affect your brand positioning etc.

You may want to target top tier clients that are able to pay good money which is okay but in developing markets, top tier clients will always want to review your experience, past clientele, portfolio etc. before working with you. And this might hold against you if you’re an absolute beginner.

To avoid this, start from where you are. Depending on the level of your skills, you can start with lower to mid level paying clients just to build your portfolio, and then focus on higher paying clients as you continue to gain experience, build on your portfolio and develop more skills.

Remember, your business can always grow and expand with time, same with your brand. And based on this, the more you grow, the more you have leverage to redefine your focus and exclude some set of clients from your target market. This is how most graphics design brands grow.

If you want to start a graphics design business in a growing economy you must understand that many people are already doing it. A research by Colorlib shows that there are over 500k employed Graphics designers in the US alone. And there’s a lot more in developing regions like Africa, India etc.

With that huge competition, to really stand out; there have to be something unique about you or the way you deliver your graphics design services.

This uniqueness can also be built around your brand and the kind of clients you want to target. For example, you can focus on targeting mid level and city based corporate clients for marketing and design ads. Depending on your level of growth.

If the above is you preferred target audience then you want to create and build your business brand to meet the taste and preferences of that audience. This is very important.

This goes beyond your logo an brand colors. It shows in the packaging and presentation of your own brands, the creative designs you make for other brands, the quality of your work, your portfolio and the excellence you create around your business and everything that relates to it, including your website, content and other branding materials.

If you want your client to think of yours as the coolest or hottest or most affordable Graphics Design brand etc., you can show this through your branding too.

Now that you have your business figured out, its time to create a business plan that will help you to achieve your specific expected business outcome. So, you want to figure out a step by step plan that will help you arrive at the goals you set earlier.

If you’re going to run a one man part time graphics design business for example and the goal is to earn 5 million NGN in your first year, find out how many hours you’ll work in a day/week to achieve this target.

Intentionally, set a clear business plan that aligns with your goal and can realistically get you to achieve those outcomes. This is the easiest way to keep your business on track.

As part of planning too, figure out how much resources you’ll have to put in place to start a graphics design business. And how much you’ll need to keep the business running until you make some decent income.

Also, as part of the planning, you’ll need to choose your design tools, the platform you’ll use to reach your target audience, the marketing strategy, your preferred business system and how you plan to run the business technically.

Based on your target goals and available funds, decide whether you’re going to use Targeted ads, Content Marketing or both.

And finally, figure out your clients. Find out where they are, what works for them and how you can effectively reach them with your business.

One good way to get clients faster as a new graphics design business owner is to have some good jobs to show for your skills. Yes this is what it is. In today’s digital world, you don’t just tell clients what you can do, you show them.

So you’ll need some jobs to demonstrate to your clients your level of experience and graphics design skills. This approach is very strategic and a good percentage of new graphics designers are using that.

If you’re just starting out without experience or any portfolio, you can create work samples. Use case studies or volunteer to create free designs for a few brands, in exchange for mentions. This gets you jobs for portfolio and a free publicity. Learn more about how to create a portfolio as a beginner here.

As a newbie too, you can start out creating samples and free design for not for profit organization, small businesses or your friends. This gives you something to document as part of your portfolio and also showcase your skills. Also, this gives you designs to create content and tell brand stories across social media and other platforms.

As part of this, request for and get testimonials and recommendations for those brands you worked with, whether you’re creating free designs, subsidized or fully paid graphics designs. Add this as part of your portfolio.

When you’re just starting a graphics design business, you may be uncertain about the right strategy to price your business. To fix this, make some research about pricing within the industry and your own sub niche(if any) so you can know what will potentially work for you and your target clients.

My advice for business owners at this stage is usually to learn carefully about existing pricing system, the supply-demand pull, your skills and what you can deliver differently, from the other brands as your pricing plays a big role in whether a client will do business with you or not.

For instance, depending on your target audience, if you set a very high price, you’d come off as a cheat to some clients. And when you set a price that’s too low, you’ll end up cheating yourself, because some clients may also think you’re not good enough. So to be on the safe side as a beginner, you have to find a balance.

In most cases, I usually advice my learners to have both a general and customized pricing system. A general pricing system can be one you use for all similar Graphics Design task. For example, you can decide to have a uniform price for all graphics design for Content Marketing. Or Book Covers.

For the customized ones, you’ll charge your clients based on the nature of the designs or their capacity to pay for the job done.

To launch a graphics design business, you’ll need a professional website that will serve as a central location where potential clients can locate you, learn about your business, review your portfolio or have access to your content.

As part of the main rquirements for your website, you’ll need a domain name that will be selected based on your business brand name, a hosting account, social media handles, content and other brand items that will be used on the website to give it the look and feel that truly represents your business.

Important pages to include on your Graphics Design website

  • Our Services Page: This should list the services you offer.
