Side hustle for students in Nigeria

When I was trying to make extra cash in school, one of the first things I did was figure out the best side hustle for students. There were a lot of options but what I needed was side business ideas that were low effort, less time consuming and easy to start for beginners.

I found a good number of these ideas but some of them were not right fit because they were very demanding in terms of resources, skill level and less rewarding financially. So, I had to narrow down my search to ideas that worked with my realities.

As someone planning to start a side business in school, there’s a lot of opportunities to start and make a decent income by the side and there are also a lot of side business ideas but all ideas are not the same. You have to find ideas that will work for you, based on your own realities.

And in this post, I’ll be sharing some of the best side hustle for students in Nigeria and how you can use these side business ideas to start a business by the side and earn an income even while in school.

This is by far, one of the easiest side hustles for students. It is easy to start, less demanding and less time consuming for students. It is one of those part-time hustles you can easily start from anywhere, if you love writing.

You might feel that evolution in AI has reduced the need for writers but don’t be surprised, the demand for good quality writers is on the increase and writers are earning far better than they used to, in specific industries. And some writers have even found ways to make money with AI.

To get started in this niche, you’ll need a smartphone or a laptop, a good internet connection and your own skills and versatility as a writer.

Outside this, you’ll also need a platform and visibility where you show up and post content consistently. It can be a social media page or your own website.

The platform gives you visibility. Showcases your skills while getting potential clients to see your work more easily. This is one of the foremost skills that gave me a headstart when I first started out.

You can get jobs on platforms like Fiver, Upwork, LinkedIn etc. And you can also network and pitch for openings directly or even promote your brand.

To make things even better, you can specialize. Instead of writing for all brands you can become an SEO writer, a research writer, copywriter or wok with whatever specialized kind of writing that appeals to you.

One good thing about writing is that it can serve as a headstart for many other skills. It can also give you the chance to work in almost ay industry while running your academic programs without interference.

This is one of the top side hustles for students. It is very popular in demand. And quite easy to start for beginners. It is also less time demanding as you can create and schedule posts in advance.

To get started, you need a decent understanding of social media content creation, posting and social media management generally.

If you’re not too familiar with this, you can opt for a course on social media management. There are a number of free and paid courses that can give you a head start. Takes a few weeks.

After learning the necessary skills, you can start positioning your self as a social media manager, create a brand and start posting relevant content to that effect.

If you want to make the most of social media marketing, you can niche down and position your services for a specific market or industry. This reduces the competition for visibility while also give you an opportunity to hone your expertise in that niche.

Digital products are a gold mine for student entrepreneurs. And in this age and time where artificial intelligence has made it even easier to create and sell content, you can create and sell digital content.

This is one of the top side hustles for students with a high return on investment. It is also low entry to start. And you do not have to be an expert in a field before creating a digital product.

One of the most attractive things about selling digital products as a student is that you do not have to recreate the product every time you sell it. This saves up a lot of time for marketing and studying

Another benefit of selling digital products is that it is a great option for passive income business. This kind of business can be very useful in income generation especially on days when you have a heavy work load in school.

There are a number of digital products you can sell like ebooks, story books, online courses etc. you can choose what works for you, depending on your skills, your resources and your goals.

Also, there are a number of platforms that accept Nigerian digital creators and their products like Amazon, Lulu, Kobo, Gumroad, Selar etc.

Affiliate marketing allows you to promote products online and get paid when people buy the products using your link or special codes. It is one of the popular side hustles for students that is well known on social media.

What makes affiliate marketing the perfect side hustle is the fact that it is very easy to start. And it also has low maintenance for students.

For example, you don’t have to own the product you’re promoting neither do you have to have them in stock. You also do not have to be limited to having a single client.

The most important things you need to have are a decent audience, capacity to create great copies and make real sales and you’ll be smiling to the bank.

You can also start anywhere. For instance, a number of students have done theirs on WhatsApp. A number of students have also promoted products on their X (Twitter) and other social media handles while getting commission from sales.

More established ones have used their websites, blogs, formal platforms etc. while these are great options, you do not have to wait until you have these in place. You can start from where you are and build towards this.

But, do keep in mind that success in this niche means that you’ll have a decent audience, create good content and be able to show up consistently.

And finally, while there are standard places to get digital products to promote like Commission Junction (CJ Affiliate), Jumia etc., you do not have to promote digital products alone. You can also take up physical products, make an arrangement with their owners, promote these products and get paid your commission.

Ghostwriting for people is a thing. It is one of the decent side hustles for students that can earn you an income by the side. I first came across this three years ago over an incident on Twitter.

Social media platforms are now paying creators but most of these creators with big platforms do not have adequate time to create content that matters to their audience.

This is where you come in. As someone with decent content creation skills, position yourself as an expert that can create content for these creators across their platforms.

If you’re able to create content that delivers their expected outcomes, be rest assured to earn a decent income by the side while still going to lectures comfortably.

Beyond social media content, you can also ghostwrite books eBooks, memoirs, biographies etc. and get paid for it while still studying comfortably. But the thing about ghostwriting is that you must b very skilled, versatile and able to meet the needs of clients.

Web development is a high-income skill. It is one of the first skills I learned by the side in school. One thing that makes web development stand out as one of the best side hustles for students in Nigeria is that it provides a lifelong skill that you can earn from, even after school.

It has a longer learning curve than most of the digital skills I’ve here but the rewards are always mouth watering and you can earn locally or internationally, working as a freelancer or in partnership with other students as an agency.

One notable thing about web development is that there is a market for it. And if you’re able to position yourself and provide solutions for brands beyond just building websites, you can be earning a decent income while still in school.

Keep in mind that when compared to the other side business ideas, web development can be time consuming for beginners without requisite skills. Depending on the platform you use, it can also take a longer time to learn the skill and get started.

If you’re learning web development with a CMS like WordPress and with the right platform, you can spend a lot less time but if you want t learn a specific programming language, it can take a little bit longer.

Regardless of your field of study, with web development, you can easily make money as a student, building websites for businesses in specific industries, niches etc.

Ai automation system is a new innovation that only became recently popular. What makes it one of the best side hustles for students is that it is not yet populated with too many people.

As businesses continue to adopt AI to boost their productivity, there’s a growing demand for experts who can help these businesses to set up AI powered automation systems that can handle routine tasks and streamline workflows.

As an AI automation expert, your main role is to help businesses analyze, design and deploy automated workflows that replace manual and repetitive tasks.

Compared to other skills, AI automation is not very difficult to get in. with the right tech skills, you can gain mastery in less than 6 months, build a portfolio and start applying for jobs.

Unlike most of the online side hustles for students, one thing that makes AI automation stand out for me is its newness. The fact that it is yet to be saturated makes it easier for beginners to build a solid brand and get jobs from scratch.

But, if you’re planning to make money with this skill, prepare to learn, build a portfolio and apply for the jobs. In fact, prepare to be really good with your skills.

Final Words

Making money online as a student is increasingly possible and many people are doing just that because the internet has created immense opportunities that do not require a large capital, physical presence or business address. And these side hustles are ideas you can start and work from anywhere around the world.

There are other side hustle ideas I could list here like Canva Graphics Designs, Video Editing, Virtual Assistance etc. which you can still check out but keep in mind, some of these ideas are time consuming and less rewarding financially if you do not have adequate time to invest in them.

Also, making money online as a student does not always mean trying all the ideas you know. Some ideas will not work. Find what works for you and stick with it. And when you do, do not quit at the first sign of failure. I failed at my first business but I got back up because I learned from failure. You can do the same.

Finally, learn, unlearn, relearn if you want to grow. Try new things. Analyze your outcomes and find a way to create a balance with your work and studying.

Always remember that you do not have to this alone. Find mentors. Sign up for our trainings and get you grounded with the right digital skills here. And do not be scared to start, even if you’re not ready.
